INDIAN WAY is a story of survival and friendship between two very humble human beings who share their way during one week.

Why “Indian Way” can concern an international co-production?

— BECAUSE OF ITS LINGUISTIC DIVERSITY.

Tamil, Hindi, English, Malayalam and Spanish are spoken in the film. India has at least 30 different languages and around 2000 dialects. The most spoken languages are Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and Malayan. In “Indian Way” the main characters talk in English between them and also speak in their vernacular languages. In India, to understand each other between different ethnic groups and regions, the common language used is the one imposed by the last British Empire. Population, in general, does not have any hard feelings towards the Raj, neither to the English people for the country’s occupation during more than 200 years. This is reflected in the pragmatism of using the language imposed by the old occupation force – even the State Television broadcasts in this language–. The Indian National Congress party (INC), founded in 1885, was politically opposed to British rule, but they were not against Britain, they wished for a union between India and England, with more participation of Indians in the government. Mahatma Gandhi had another vision of the situation, and thanks to him Indian people got their independence. Nowadays the English language has remained in India as a linguistic trail going back to the old British Empire.

Why “Indian Way” has an interest for international audience?

— BECAUSE OF ITS CULTURAL DIVERSITY. IN INDIA DIFFERENT RELIGIONS COEXIST.

Throughout history, India has experienced periods of great prosperity and development when its religions expanded out of the limits of the Indian subcontinent and periods when the country was subjugated by foreign rulers with different beliefs. In Alexander the Great’s time, in the kingdoms created after his conquest of most of the occidental part of India, the Greek religion coexisted with Hinduism and Buddhism. From the 8th century, Muslims started to arrive in the north of India and centuries later they took control of nearly all the country. By the 19th century the colonization of India by British, Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish was completed. Christianity in India goes back, according to tradition, to the apostle Saint Thomas preaching. Nowadays there are 14 million Catholics, mainly in the district of Kerala in the southwest coast with the highest percentage of Catholic population – approximately 25% -. Tamil Nadu has the next highest Christian population. Hinduism is the most extensive religion (79,8%), followed by Islam (13,7%). All of them coexist with other religious minorities Jainists, Sikhs, Zoroastrians (Parsis) and Buddhists.

Genealogical tree of religions in the world

This religion richness and cultural exchange can be seen in the film “Indian Way” because one of the characters is a Catholic and the other is a Hindu. Both of them share common principles as the concept of SOUL (Christian) or ATMAN (Hindu), concerning the intangible, divine and immortal essence of the human being. Through their religions, our characters also share their dark side, intransigence, imposition of strict rules, and having to pay a very high price for failure to obey. India has always been a philosophic and religious generator which then expanded throughout the centuries to Europe, the Near East and the Far East. Therefore, it cannot be denied that India is of great spiritual influence to the rest of the world.

Why “Indian Way” can be of interest for different age range audiences?

— BECAUSE IT IS AN ENTERTAINING HUMAN ADVENTURE.

INDIAN WAY is a “footmovie”, a road movie “by foot”. Our main characters have to share the road (which is the road of life) despite their speaking different languages, profess different religions, and come from different social backgrounds. Both of them have no other options to survive than by helping each other. Their situation shows the complexity of the world we live in, with a wide range of complex cultural relationships and where coexistence continues to be the main challenge, the outstanding matter. During all of the many problems that the characters meet with in INDIAN WAY the worst that they come up with is the tsunami catastrophe in 2004. Over and above the happiness and miseries provoked between mankind, there will always be the inexorability of Mother Nature.
